Newmont Mining Company St. Manuel Copper-Molybdenum Ore Selection Plant

1 Introduction
St. Manuel is a Newmont mining company located 70km northwest of Taksen, Arizona.
The deposit was proven before the American Civil War. In 1881 the mine began mining. In 1952, the capacity of 30kt/d was expanded. It was expanded to 40kt/d in 1965 and expanded to 66kt/d in 1971.
It has an annual production capacity of 145kt copper and 2180t molybdenum , and has become an important by-product molybdenum mine in the United States.
2. Deposits, ores and mining
The St. Manuel copper-molybdenum deposit is present in quartzite , monzonite and feldspar porphyry. The reserves of molybdenum are second only to Benem in the United States. After located Teniente, Chuquicamata and Bin Nimu ranked fourth in the world, a total amount of molybdenum metal 163kt. The ore grade is 0.68% Cu, 0.03% Mo.
The mine is mined under the pit, and the 22t bucket is lifted by the shaft.
3. Mineral processing technology
The coarse crushing is set on the ground of the stope, and the middle and fine crushing are set in the plant. The three-stage open road with pre-screening is broken, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 crushing process
The coarse crushing was carried out by a 1067×1651 mm A.C rotary crusher with a product size of -229 mm.
The medium crushed 4 sets of standard 2135mm Simmons cone crushers with a capacity of 900t/h.
Finely crushed 7 sets of 2135mm Simmons cone crusher with a product size of -13mm.
The copper-molybdenum mixed flotation adopts a rod mill-ball mill two-stage rough grinding process, one rough selection, coarse fine re-grinding, and two selected processes, as shown in FIG. 2 .

Grinding a total of 13 side-by-side series, one bar grinding two billiard mills per series. Each billiard mill is closed with 4~6 sets of ¢510mm Krebs hydrocyclone. The rod mill has a particle size of 82%~85%-10 mesh, and the overflow fineness of the swirling flow is 58%-200 mesh, and the concentration is 28%.
The copper-molybdenum mixed concentrate grade is 28% Cu and 0.65% Mo.
The mixed flotation reagent is Meinex, fuel oil MIBC, and the flotation pH is about 10.5.
Copper-molybdenum separation, using concentrated drug removal, 6 selection processes. When copper is high, the process of cyanide immersion copper (and immersion gold) is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3 St. Manuel copper-molybdenum sorting process
Flotation molybdenum concentrate grade 51% ~ 55% Mo, 1% Cu, after cyanide leaching copper can be reduced to 0.5%, molybdenum recovery rate of 70%. Copper concentrate grade: 28%~30% Cu, 0.12% Mo, copper recovery rate 92%.
The yield of molybdenum concentrate in a few years (according to the amount of molybdenum metal): 1443t in 1975, 1187t in 1976, and 1447t in 1977.
4, a few points to add
In the early 1970s, in cooperation with Milan and Ross, a rectangular spiral lining was placed in the lattice ball mill to reduce the ball loading by 16% and the energy consumption by 16.7%.
Add diatomaceous earth as a filter aid to reduce concentrate water and reduce drying energy consumption.
