A brief history of boron mining

China is one of the major boron- producing countries in the world. It is also the earliest country to discover and utilize boron mines. As early as in the 720th Tibetan dynasty, the book "Four Medical Codes" has a record of using boron ore to treat diseases.

The geological exploration of China's boron mine began at the beginning of the founding of New China. During the period from 1951 to 1953, the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted an investigation into Bangor in Tibet. The Tibet Geological Bureau also conducted a professional survey of borax in Bangor and other places for the first time in 1956. Later, during the period from 1958 to 1963, several related units successively carried out exploration and research work on boron mines in other parts of Tibet, and made preliminary evaluations on the salt lake boron mines in Tibet.

In 1957, the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Mineral Materials of the Ministry of Geology discovered the lake bottom boron mine when drilling the Dachaidan Lake. In 1958, Qinghai Geological Bureau discovered the lakeshore boron mine of Dachaidan.

From the 1970s to the mid-1980s, the Qinghai Salt Lake Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Mineral Deposits of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences successively investigated other salt lakes in Qinghai. These research efforts have laid a good foundation for the development and utilization of boron resources in the region.

The late 50's to early 60's, following Hunan Qiliping quality of magnesium skarn boron found again in the late 1970s, in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangxi provinces (regions) have found similar boron bed.

The early 1970s, in the province of Hebei Geological Bureau (now Tianjin) in Jixian - Pinggu area of Middle Proterozoic strata containing manganese found in manganese boracite, the Chinese boron bed adds a new type.

China is also the first country in the world to mine borax. As early as 1563, China had established a hand workshop in Tibet to engage in the mining and processing of natural borax and sell its products to Europe. Prior to the founding of New China, borax was produced in the Dachaidan Lakeside of the Qaidam Basin. In 1958, a borax plant was built in Dahai, Qinghai, and borax was produced from the sodium borate from the large and small Chaidan Lakes.

Since the mid-1950s, China has produced a number of mines in eastern Liaoning and southern Jilin, and has established a series of boron chemical products such as borax and boric acid. At present, the region is still the most important boron raw material production base in China.
