China's olefin industry appears "three pillars"

A person in charge of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation recently stated that coal-to-olefins and imported methanol-to-olefins are starting to take place at a time when domestic petroleum-based olefins cannot meet their needs.

It is understood that traditionally China has been using naphtha catalytic cracking olefins production mainly concentrated in Sinopec, PetroChina two major groups. There will still be a market gap of more than 10 million tons in the next 10 years.

According to statistics from the Petrochemical Association, there are currently 29 coal-to-olefins projects under construction, proposed, and in planning stages in China, with a total olefin production capacity exceeding 20 million tons per year.

In recent years, another olefin production route, the methanol-to-olefins project, has been rapidly rolled out. According to the current projects under construction, the total production capacity of imported methanol-to-olefins has exceeded 5 million tons.

Industry experts analyzed that when the price of crude oil is around US$80/barrel, the full cost of naphtha to olefins is 8,000 yuan/ton; the coal price used by Shenhua to produce coal to make olefins is 340 yuan/ton, which is calculated from coal to olefins. The full cost of the project is 7,000 yuan/ton; the average cost of imported methanol to shore is 2,000 yuan/ton, and the total cost of producing olefins is 8,000 to 8,500 yuan/ton. Adding the production capacity of coal-to-olefins and methanol-to-olefins, the olefin production capacity in the next 10 years will exceed 13 million tons, which can meet the market gap of 10 million tons caused by insufficient production capacity of petroleum-based olefins.
