Germany launches marine M46DF dual fuel engine

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems recently introduced a new dual-fuel marine engine, the MaK M 46 DF dual fuel engine.
The machine burns diesel and liquefied natural gas at a speed of 500 rpm and 514 rpm, and the single-cylinder power is 900 kW. The machine is available in both inline and V type.
The M 46 DF dual fuel engine is currently being tested at the Caterpillar Medium Speed Engine Plant in Rostock, Germany. The first prototype is expected to be delivered in 2014. The M 46 DF dual fuel engine has a bore of 460 mm and a stroke of 610 mm and is designed for electric drive and mechanical propulsion systems. The machine can be switched between burning LNG, marine diesel or heavy oil. According to reports, industry-leading efficiency can be achieved when burning LNG. The fuel consumption of this machine is the lowest in this grade. Liquefied natural gas meets IMO Tier III and EPA Tier 4 requirements when operating worldwide, including emission control zones.
The M 46 DF dual fuel engine will be manufactured in Rostock, Germany and distributed and sold through the Caterpillar Mak distribution network.
